I can definitely say, that I loved this book and I could hardly put it down. The idea to use the seven deadly sins as characters just caught me right from the start.

Opinion

Witches and demons, pretty much the devil himself as well. Enemies to lovers, and betrayals at every corner. That would pretty much sum it up, if I were to end my review right here. This dark urban fantasy book could really cast a spell on me.

Because of her dramatic writing style and attention to detail, Kerri Maniscalco has produced a chilling and intriguing feast. Her attention to Sicilian cuisine and culture is captivating! It left me craving for some good Italian food way too often.

I find it fascinating how Emilia’s relationship with her family was mostly shaped by food and the family business. That and, of course, witchcraft. But also interesting is the fact, that Maniscalco used her real family’s restaurant as a model for this fictional one.

Maniscalco spins a really captivating tale about evil curses and the Wicked, also known as the Princes of Hell. The underground royalties are hunting for Emilia, as well as other things to gain their freedom from a curse. I adored the Princes‘ mystique. I enjoyed reading about the connection between Emilia and Wrath and how it already developed during this first volume of the series.

Emilia comes around as a strong female, and I especially enjoyed her development in general. She faced the consequences of her decisions head on and whoever dared to stand in her way to seek partly brutal retributions for her sister’s murder. Wrath turned out to be as devilish as he can be as a Prince of Hell. But he also surprised me with a lot of his actions. I really don’t want to spoil anyone reading this, but telling more about the plot.

The quarrels between Emilia and Wrath kept me on edge. I squirmed at the end’s cliffhanger because I am really eager to find out what happens next. I’m dying to devour the next book, which I will pick up very soon. The Kingdom of the Wicked is such a fantastic beginning to the series!

Wavering between 3.5 & 4 stars. Entertaining, I liked the setting and the characters. However most of the twists were predictable. Definitely want to find out what happens though! ( )

I know I took a long time to finish this, but I wanted to take my time due to the world that pulled me in.

I loved the world created, the seeven deadly sins being prince's of hell and all of them having kingdoms, which I think represents some of the gates.

Nonna was one of my favourite characters. Emilia was the silent daughter and how she progressed belonging to the house of wrath.

Wrath was okay as a character, and I didn't feel his agelessness of being as old of time and, I guess, not to wrathy.

Antonio was exactly like, I thought. I called it . . .

The plot was interesting, and both parties had communication issues and why most things did not go smoothly.

Enemies to lovers ( )

Like the ACOTAR (A Court of Thorns and Roses) series, this was another series that I was hesitant about because (in my library at least) it's listed as YA. And again, like ACOTAR, the first book is fine when it comes to young adult, but after that, the rest of the books in the series should be considered "new adult." This story is about two sisters in Italy who, after one of them is murdered, discover there's more to their shared history and family than they realized. The surviving sister, Emilia, is thrown into a world of more powerful magic than she could have ever guessed, and finds herself face-to-face with Wrath, a prince of Hell, who she has trapped and has asked for help in finding her sister, Vittoria's, killer. Throughout their time together, she realizes that perhaps Wrath isn't as "wicked" as she thought, and they actually come to care for each other. The book had me guessing the entire time about who the killer was, and as someone who comes from an Italian family, I loved the fact that much of the magic talked about, and the words used, were Italian. Again, this is another great book with a very strong female character and amazing world building. ( )
