In this young adult novel friends Kit and Liza have been looking forward to this trip forever. Five girls, five tickets overseas. It's exactly what they all need after the final slog of high school. But when Kit is suddenly forced to drop out, Liza's left with three girls she barely knows. There's Mai, committed only to partying. There's Tam, who already has her doubts about leaving her sick father behind. And there's Olivia, so miserable about screwing up exams she's not even sure she wants to get out of bed, let alone on a plane. All Liza wants from this trip is to discover a new version of herself. She just hadn't planned on doing it without Kit by her side. And they're all learning that travel isn't just about the places you go, but about who you're with at the time.… (más)
This book perfectly captures the experience of going on an adventure with a group of friends. It's exciting and cozy at the same time, and lighthearted even when the characters are dealing with some heavy stuff. The whole cast was so relateable. I connected hard with the way Liza was quiet, socially awkward, obsessed with books and harbouring a crush on a seemingly unattainable girl, with Olivia's distress over working for years to get into a prestigious course and then messing up at the very end, with Mai's panic attacks during exam time, with Tam's struggle to deal with her father's illness, with Kit's ... OK, I guess I didn't relate to Kit on a personal level but I could sure see why everyone loved her. It was just so nice.
My only complaint: yet another case of the missing b-word. It's always "I'm sometimes into girls", never "I'm bisexual". As a bi girl, that's frustrating.
