"The life-changing principles of Stoicism taught through the story of its most famous proponent Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius was the final famous Stoic philosopher of the ancient world. The Meditations, his personal journal, survives to this day as one of the most loved self-help and spiritual classics of all time. In How to Think Like a Roman Emperor, cognitive psychotherapist Donald Robertson weaves the life and philosophy of Marcus Aurelius together seamlessly to provide a compelling modern-day guide to the Stoic wisdom followed by countless individuals throughout the centuries as a path to achieving greater fulfillment and emotional resilience. How to Think Like a Roman Emperor takes readers on a transformative journey along with Marcus, following his progress from a young noble at the court of Hadrian--taken under the wing of some of the finest philosophers of his day--through to his reign as emperor of Rome at the height of its power. Robertson shows how Marcus used philosophical doctrines and therapeutic practices to build emotional resilience and endure tremendous adversity, and guides readers through applying the same methods to their own lives. Combining remarkable stories from Marcus's life with insights from modern psychology and the enduring wisdom of his philosophy, How to Think Like a Roman Emperor puts a human face on Stoicism and offers a timeless and essential guide to handling the ethical and psychological challenges we face today"--… (más)

Really fantastic book that did a great job introducing me to stoicism. I really enjoyed how the authors background in cognitive-behavioural psychotherapy provided professional modern scientific backing to many of the techniques employed by stoic thousands of years ago. I liked how they took my through some of the exercises and provided examples of daily rituals I can practice. Following the life of Marcus Aurelius was really interesting and inspiring, it gets me excited to read Meditations personally!

What a great book. I got so much from it and will definitely be reading it again. I listened to the audible version but will also be buying a paper copy for the shelf so I can better study it.

I've mostly read Ryan Holiday since stumbling upon his Daily Stoic YouTube channel is what got me into the idea of studying Stoicism. There's a big difference between Robertson and Holiday though. Holiday seems to me to be more of a collector of quotes and stories and a sharer of those things along with a bit of deeper thought to go along. But I got so much more from How to Think Like a Roman Emperor.

If you're interested in Stoic philosophy or, like me, learning how to manage anxiety and stress, this book might be something to look into. ( )

As a fan of stoicism and Meditations, this book filled in some historical and biographical gaps and provided context for Marcus' life. I didn't previously appreciate that for Marcus to embrace philosophy and stoicism in particular, over rhetoric, was really a revolutionary act. I didn't know that some of his personal correspondence had survived which shows him as a funny and affectionate human. This book gave me a more balanced view of Marcus, his application of stoic principles to his life and the historical significance of both. ( )

This was a title that going into I was not sure what to expect. Too dry? Too preachy? Too deep? To my surprise Mr. Robertson's book was eminently readable, all-together understandable, and way too short. When it ended I was actually disappointed that there wasn't more. Highly recommended for any person, at any time in their life. ( )
