Aaron Poochigian'sMr. Either/Or is an ingenious debut, a verse novel melding American mythology, noir thriller, and classical epic into gritty rhythms, foreboding overtones, and groovy jams surrounding the reader in a surreal atmosphere. Imagine Byron's Don Juan on a high-stakes romp through a Raymond Chandler novel. Think Hamlet in Manhattan with a license to kill. Aaron Poochigian earned a PhD in Classics from the University of Minnesota and an MFA in Poetry from Columbia University. His book of translations from Sappho,Stung With Love, was published in 2009.The Cosmic Purr, a book of original poetry, was published in 2012.… (más)

When I had read some reviews about this book I had very high expectations of it. I thought it would be an easy read with a more traditional poetry form. However, the reality was quite different. I’m sorry to say but I really struggled reading this book. There were some parts of the poems that did rhyme but much of them didn’t so I was left wondering whether it was meant to be a book of poetry or a novel which adopted an unusual format that I had not encountered before. I never really got this answered unfortunately.

I applaud the author for the time and effort gone into writing this book but personally it was extremely confusing for me and as such I never managed to understand the story/poems.

Don't be put off by "A Novel in Verse". This isn't like trying to read an old translation of the Aeneid. Poochigian's book moves fast, through thefts, gang fights, sewer wading, supernatural phenomenon, and a host of other things taking place in New York City as various forces vie for possession of objects that possess incredible amounts of destructive power. The protagonist, who works for a mysterious government agency, is tasked with tracking down said objects and becomes involved in the things mentioned earlier--gang fights, sewers, etc. It is a whole lot of fun, and the pace never slackens. Though some of the book reads like verse, most is more like a well done stream-of-conscience narrative. Most impressive is the sense of place as the violent action moves through the city. It is a quick read, and well worth it. The author, in a tongue in cheek manner, does a great job combining noir, science fiction, and even a bit of a love story. Highly recommended! ( )
