James the Red Engine rushes under the bridge to take freight cars to the Yard, but he is going too fast and falls off the track into a field of cows. Thomas saves the day by bringing a special breakdown train that helps lift James back onto the rails. Back at the shed, the workmen make James as good as new. The working wheels at the bottom of the book let Thomas fans take James for a ride, too!
