"Recently divorced Tina Durham is trying to be self-sufficent, but her personal-training career is floundering, her closest friends are swept up in new relationships, and her washing machine has just flooded her kitchen. It's enough to make a girl cry. Instead, she calls a plumbing service, and Joanne "Joe Mama" Delario comes to the rescue. Joe is sweet, funny, and good at fixing things. She also sees something special in Tina and invites her to try out for the roller derby team she coaches. Derby offers Tina an outlet for her frustrations, a chance to excel, and the female friendships she's never had before. And as Tina starts to thrive at derby, the tension between her and Joe cranks up. Despite their player/coach relationship, they give in to their mutual attraction. Sex in secret is hot, but Tina can't help but want more. With work still on the rocks and her realtionship in the closet, Tina is forced to reevaluate her life. Can she be content with a secret lover? Or with being dependent on someone else again? It's time for Tina to tackle her fears, both on and off the track." --… (más)

This book was good! Tina is an amazing character, and her love story was intriguing and heartbreakingly adorable. I’m definitely going to be reading more from this author, especially if their other works have as much LGBTQ rep! ( )

I found this book through a review on the Lesbrary, and I'm really glad I was able to get a copy from my library system. I think it is really important that libraries carry books like this - f/f, trans main character, women in sports - to give their readers a diversity of choice.

I really enjoyed Tina as a character. I felt like she was well fleshed out, and we the readers came to understand her insecurities, hopes, and feelings as she moves through trying to balance her past, her desire for a relationship, and her desire for female companionship and a return to professional sport. It was great to see her handle professional relationships, with Nate and Jeremy, friendships, with Lauren and Stella, and romance with Joe, and I really appreciate that she balanced all of these with being a professional who is really great at her job as a personal trainer.

I also really enjoyed the roller derby setting, and how it emphasized the team aspects and athleticism of the sport. It was interesting that Tina, while having an advantage as a former professional athlete, was not automatically great at it, and had to work to make the team and take part in her bouts.

Whether you are looking for f/f romance, positive trans main characters, or women in sports, I would recommend giving this book a try. ( )

This was probably four stars for the depiction of lots of women (straight, bi, lesbian, cis, trans, butch, femme) and their friendships, and for having a trans woman as a main character; two stars for the romance proper. Roller Girl isn't long enough to really give depth to the relationship between Tina and Joe, and the central conflict between them (we can't be open about our relationship because of how it might hurt... the dynamic of our inclusive, amateur roller derby team?) felt more than a bit forced. Overall, though, a sweet, light, positive romance. ( )
