Okay first off, if you are reading this review, please understand I committed the cardinal sin of readership - I did NOT read book 1. I know...I know. I've read every other Stark book how could I miss Dirtiest Secret? Got me. However, the author does a superb job and weaving the storyline from book 1 into book 2 that I never felt lost. Right from page one I was engaged with both primary characters and couldn't put the book down. I need to know what happened when they were teenagers and who did this...like soon. Again with 4 stars? First off, I'm not a prude. I enjoy erotica. But, I really, really, really wanted more of the story that I was wrapped up in and less of the sexy times. Yep, that will get me kicked out of the fun club. But it was the suspense story that kept me pulled in and some of the scenes just got in the way. I realize that the characters have some issues to overcome and really the sexy times are important to the story. My take away for you: If you love the Stark books, you are going to LOVE this series. Its J Kenner's writing at her best. However, do yourself a favor, start with book one unlike me. I think maybe there was more story there that I missed out on. Definitely an entertaining and suspenseful read that I will be going on for book 3. 4 out of 5 stars. Kenner’s erotic romantic suspense titles, but the Dirtiest Trilogy just hasn’t hit the mark with me. Still bearing Kenner’s signature taboo or damaged hero who needs to experience passion in a more than plain vanilla way as a result of past demons, but just missing a certain intensity or intrigue factor, I felt like Hottest Mess was a rehash of the themes we already learned in Dirtiest Secret. It failed to move the needle forward on either the romance or the underlying suspense arc, except for in a few rushed passages at the end, and I was left with doubts as to whether I should continue with the next and final book in the Dirtiest Trilogy, Sweetest Taboo. Instead it felt like the focus of this book was on too much gratuitous, heat-filled scenes rather than on unrolling a complex plot which is what I yearn for in a romantic suspense title.
