This is not intended as a controversial book. It does not seek to argue with fundamentalists and convince them that they are mistaken. As far as the present purpose goes, they are welcome to continue in their opinions. Nor does it seek to present a full description, analysis and explanation of the fundamentalist point of view: this I have already attempted in my Fundamentalism (SCM Press 1977, 1981). This is rather a pastoral book. It seeks to offer help to those who have grown up in the world of fundamentalism or have become committed to it but who have in the end come to feel that it is a prison from which they must escape."
