It takes a little while to get into the action of the story, but once it does it doesn't really let you go. I was so happy to find out this is going to be a trilogy. The story line is well thought out and the world building is brilliant. It's Earth, but it's NOT Earth! The characters are good and relatable. I would recommend this book. 4 out of 5 stars. ( ) Easily the best new YA fantasy of the year, Ms. Egan presents us with a magic-based reality that echoes 17th century England. Our hero, an orphan with a adopted family of upright if criminal types, takes a job spying in the house of a great lady. Naturally, things are far more complicated that they first seem and our able Julia is suddenly in it up to her neck. A well-drawn cast of characters, constant even pacing, and a plot that, while resolved at the end of the book, is deep enough to sustain a trilogy mark this the beginning of a beautiful reading relationship. A big thank you to Penguin Random House who were kind enough to send me this ARC. (If you guys could get the second book out asap, I'd really appreciate it.) teen/adult fiction. Witches, housemaids, ancient gods and other creatures clash in a British period-esque fantasy world. There is a little romance, and tons of danger, suspense and mystery. This is a going to be a series you'll want to follow. (parental note: contains sexually active teens but no actual sex scenes, and violence, but I'm guessing ultra-conservatives probably won't pick up a book with obvious occult subject matter anyway?) Literary Merit: Great Characterization: Great Recommended: Highly Level: Middle School & High School The story takes place in an unknown era where magic is illegal and witches are publicly drowned. Witches write down their wishes for them to take effect, so any woman found with writing instruments will be, at minimum under suspicious, or more likely, instantly condemned. The main character's (Julia) mother was drowned as a witch when Julia was younger, which changed the direction of her life. Though Julia is not a witch, she does have the ability to "vanish". A power she employs to benefit her life as a spy. And a thief. I loved the mystery, the magic, and the colorful characters! While Julia is a brave and resourceful character in most situations, she is also weak and unsure in others, which I think makes her relatable to readers. I truly enjoyed this book and look forward to sequels. I really liked this one. The beginning is a tad rough--slightly slow and everything feels a bit disjointed--but the more I read, the more I liked it, the more engrossing it became; and by the end of the book I was completely sucked in, loving Julia and her voice, and anxiously scurrying to see if there was a planned sequel. It isn't that the story ends on a cliffhanger (It doesn't. Not really.), but there are enough threads left hanging, enough lurking possibilities, that I am really looking forward to reading on. Mind, the book isn't perfect. If I have one complaint it's that the secondary characters could use a little more fleshing out. With so many of them I only feel as if I have a general idea of who they are and how they function, but I also find myself not entirely minding this as it seems appropriate from Julia's perspective, the relatively short time span we are with her, and the rather dire circumstances she faces. (I also now fully understand Catherine Egan's response to the question about romance and her ideas possibly differing from others. The potential burgeoning romance is so barely there, I find myself enjoying it all the more, so props to her for that. Always enjoy romances more when they are more minor plot points.) Meanwhile, the world-building is solid, the magic/witchcraft is uniquely framed, and the setting is immersive. Definitely worth checking out and sticking with. Definitely going to recommend to patrons. sin reseñas | añadir una reseña

Julia espía. Julia roba. Julia... desaparece. Booklist ENGLISH DESCRIPTIONJulia has the unusual ability to be . . . unseen. Not invisible, exactly. Just beyond most people's senses. It's a dangerous trait in a city that has banned all forms of magic and drowns witches in public Cleansings. But it's a useful trait for a thief and a spy. And Julia has learned--crime pays. She's being paid very well indeed to infiltrate the grand house of Mrs. Och and report back on the odd characters who live there and the suspicious dealings that take place behind locked doors. But what Julia discovers shakes her to the core. She certainly never imagined that the traitor in the house would turn out to be . . . her. Murder, thievery, witchcraft, betrayal--Catherine Egan builds a dangerous world where her fierce and flawed heroine finds that even a girl who can vanish can't walk away from her own worst deeds.
