Mary Handley continues her desire to be a private detective, in Brooklyn of 1980, and when Emily Worsham arrives with a new case, this would make only her second, she can have no idea of the consequences. A good mystery or mysteries but couldn't take to the style of the writing which meant that I didn't get immersed into the story as I would wish. Plus there was Mary Handley herself, on the whole I probably would say that I didn't particularly like her and did find her romance unlikely. Eventually she is hired to prove that the uncle of Emily Worsham was murdered by his wife 20 years ago. This old case turns into two cases when someone else is murdered. I was expecting historical crime fiction and instead I got a cozy mystery with a lot of dropping of famous names and references to some historical events, however there was no feel of the period (late 1890s). There is also a romance with a wealthy suitor. A lot of characters were introduced early in the book and I assumed they would all be pulled together into the plot later in the book, but I'll never know because I only made it to page 100 before giving up. This just wasn't what I was looking for.I received a free copy of this book from the publisher however I wound up listening to the audiobook borrowed from the library. The characters were interesting, and the story seemed reasonably possible, but it just didn't necessarily fully click to me. It was just... meh. That being said, I think someone who is interested in historical New York would appreciate the story. I just don't know how many people that necessarily applies to. Made it about 3/4 of the way through and decided it wasn't worth my time to finish. I found the characters uninteresting and the story even more so. Not a winner for me. sin reseñas | añadir una reseña

And when Emily Worsham shows up at her new office-- convinced her uncle John Worsham was murdered and desperate for answers--Mary's second assignment begins. As she investigates the curious circumstances surrounding John's death, Mary soon finds herself entangled in a high-stakes family scandal, a series of interconnected murders, political corruption, untrustworthy sources, and an unexpected romance with a central member of New York's elite. Featuring historic figures like Andrew Carnegie, John D. Rockefeller, and the Vanderbilt family, Brooklyn on Fire takes Mary on a wild journey from New York City to North Carolina to uncover not only the truth of one man's death, but to unravel the mystery in three murders - with links tied perilously close to her own personal world. It's the late 1800s, and Mary Handley is a woman ahead of her time. To her parents' dismay, Mary wants to be a detective. After solving Goodrich case, things have died down and Mary begins to wonder if she will ever get another case...until she is visited by Emily Worsham. Emily wants to find out the truth about her Uncle's death. But when Emily turns up dead, Mary begins to unravel a mystery that puts everyone she loves in danger.
This was a great mystery that reminded me of Sherlock Holmes. Mary was a strong independent woman. I enjoyed how realistic her family dynamic was and there's even a budding romance. I look forward to reading more from this author. ( )
