Candice Ransom's picture book for beginning readers, PUMPKIN DAY, is a short story about a little boy and his family as they take a trip to a pumpkin patch. This is a good seasonal book for fall or halloween, although I would not consider it multicultural. The illustrations are cute and colorful, and depict an African American family. I think this would be a cute story to use during the fall season with students who are learning to read. It would be fun to take a class field trip to a pumpkin patch, especially if students have not done so before. They could each pick out a small pumpkin and design how they want their jack-o-lantern to look. Then I and other adults could cut out the shapes and allow the students to empty out all of the pumpkin seeds. ( )

Pumpkin day is not considered a multicultural book. I would consider it a holiday book for younger elementary students K-2.. It is a poem of a family picking out a pumpkin in a pumpkin patch. The difference with this book is that the illustrations display a dark skinned family. The family is not overcoming anything they are simply picking out a pumpkin, as i did when i was a child. The illustrations are done in what looks to be colored pencil. This would be a good classroom book near the Halloween season. ( )

This is an early readers picture book that is all about fall. It has simple words that describe a young boy and his family getting ready for Halloween by picking out and carving pumpkins. This is a good fall themed book that teachers could use in a lower level grade to start the season. They could discuss if they've ever visited a pumpkin patch or carved a pumpkin before. The illustrations are cute paintings with a good amount of detail. ( )
