"Helen lives a decent, uncomplicated life. Satisfied in her career, she's raising three happy teenagers, and her family has the most envied house on the street. Admittedly, she's growing just a little disenchanted with her marriage to her workaholic husband, Werner. But that's nothing she can't fix. Then one day Helen comes home to something completely unexpected that threatens to shatter her carefully cultivated world. For disaffected, young petty criminals Ralf and Brian, it was a scheme to make some cash: a quick home invasion. The targets they've chosen are Helen and Werner. With Ralf as lookout, Brian disappears into Helen and Werner's house. But he never comes out. And Helen's nightmare is just beginning. She can't possibly imagine how much worse it can get or just how far she'll need to go to protect her family."--Amazon.com.… (más)

Helen and Werner have the perfect marriage, or do they? When a burglar breaks in while they are home, Helen defends herself but Werner wants to keep it a secret. There's only one other person that suspects what happened the night Brian disappeared. Ralf is determined to find him.....Be careful what you wish for.....

Although this book was slightly suspenseful, it wasn't as thrilling as I'd hoped. Maybe it's the difference in cultures, I don't know. But I couldn't fathom leaving teenagers with a babysitter/grandparent. I was the sitter at 13, not the other way around. Also, the disposal of the body made no sense. If you work in a different area and your boss finds you out of your way in disposal, not once but twice, don't you think she would question why you're there. Sorry, this book was really badly written and not well thought out.

I received this book as part of a free set in honor of World Book Day. I dislike the thriller genre, so I do not intend to read this novel. In addition, many reviews indicate that the novel is overly graphic. Furthermore, it is implausible. If you accidentally kill someone in self defense during a home invasion, you don't secretly dispose of the body; just call the police. If you friend is killed robbing a home, you don't try to learn what happened by getting involved with your friend's girlfriend and with the daughter of the family.

Everything is going great in your life and then suddenly without warning you walk into your home and everything changes in a heartbeat. You have barely a second to decide what to do and your choices are very limited. So you quickly decide without thinking of the consequences. You’re then stuck with many decisions to make in a very short amount of time.
You and your husband make your decision and spend the rest of the time in the book regretting and rethinking that decision. Although at the time you felt it was the best move, now you’re not so sure. There’s nothing you can do though now except ride it out and hope for the best.
That about sums up what happens here in the story. Although it is extremely well done, there’s a bit of predictability to it. Overall I really enjoyed it. The characters seem real and likable and you want to root for them. 3.5 rounded up for the translation. ( )

3.5 Stars for this fast read. Chapters are very short, which adds to your speed reading. The chapters alternate between two points of view. One is Ralf, a young man caught up in the wrong friend. Asked to support a friend in something illegal against his better judgement, and it goes totally wrong. The second is Helen, a married wife and mother, who enters her home in the middle of a burglary. From there, the thriller unfolds!

I enjoyed the writing, and the character development. This book was translated into English, which can sometimes make the storyline hard to follow. Definitely not in this case. I did question some of the choices the character made, but then if they made the ‘correct’ choice, there wouldn’t have been a story! For me, the title is misleading...Dear Mother...referring to only a few letters referenced in the book. The ending seemed to be rushed, I reread the last two chapter to make sure I didn’t miss anything.

This book is good for vacation!

I received an ARC of this book. Opinion is mine alone! ( )

Goed verhaal. Spannend van begin tot einde. Op het einde toch enkele verrassende wendingen. ( )
