Fiction. Literature. Mystery. Humor (Fiction.) HTML:A California beach town is flooded with movie stars and the occasional murder in this "funny, sexy mystery" from the Desperate Housewives staff writer (Publishers Weekly).

As movie stars descend on Santa Barbara for an international film festival, smart-talking deputy chief detective Nola MacIntire and her handsome partner, Tony Angelotti, are out to solve the murder of a local street musician. It sounds like a simple-enough case of senseless killingâ??until a businessman who recently lost his shirt in the crash also loses his life.

Suddenly, Nola and Tony have a tangled web of crime on their hands. And pulling the strings leads them to shady real estate deals, underground eco-radicals, and more danger than either wants to deal with in this "absolutely hilarious" debut novel by a five-time Emmy-winning television writer and producer (Marilyn Dahl).
Nominated for Best Mystery, Southern California Independent Booksellers Association.

Although there were things that grated with me like the 40 year old woman obsessed with her physical appearance and superficial approach to dating and relationships, the actual crime plot was solid and enjoyable. I'm not sure I'd read more in this series but this was well above a cozy mystery. ( )

This kind of book is usually exactly my type; I enjoy a fun and witty murder mystery. Sharp heroines with a little self-deprecation are my jam. Yet after just one page with this heroine (page 14 by the way as dead person came first), I was done with this girl-woman. I think it was the personal affront to both me and my mother in equating Chico’s and death; back in the day I would have ignored and kept on chugging (reading), but I have too many more books to read than to spend more time with a heroine who pisses me off.

Anne Flett-Giordano serves up a romp through Santa Barbara’s glitterati with enough plot turns to keep the reader’s head on a swivel. A fun and imperfect protagonist, Nora MacIntire, with her long-suffering but witty sidekick, Tony, try to sort out a sudden spate of seemingly unconnected murders. The writing’s sharp, and the action races ahead, however improbably. Flett-Giordano’s chops as a TV screenwriter are obvious, as she keeps the action moving and chapters brief.

My only real complaint was the number of Hollywood insider references. While they were clever, the device seemed overused. A reader who’s a bit pop-culture-challenged is left feeling like the awkward kid at the party who’s pretending to think all the popular kid’s jokes are funny.

That aside, the book was fun and witty, and never boring. Serious literature it’s not, but it may well be the best beach read I came across this year. ( )

This was a fast funny read. A great book to take to the beach and enjoy as you can put it down and pick it back up and still enjoy the twists and turns the story takes the reader. There are many points of this story that do not seem to be connected and I wondered if I was reading a story of many stories within each other. The author has the ability to bring her characters to life in smart, funny, enjoyable, and exciting ways. I look forward to more from Anne Flett-Giordano. ( )

This book was not what I expected. Instead I found a really funny mystery with a strong female lead character who was not silly. The characters are real and the story/mystery is easy to follow.

I want to read more from this author! ( )
