"Ben Dejooli is a Navajo cop who can't escape his past. Six years ago his little sister Ana vanished without a trace. His best friend saw what happened, but he refuses to speak of what he knows, and so was banished from the Navajo tribe. That was the day the crows started following Ben. Caroline Adams is a nurse with a special talent: she sees things others can't see. She knows that Ben is more than he seems, and that the crows are trying to tell him something. What the crows know will shed new light on the mystery of Ana's disappearance, and throw Ben and Caroline into a race against time to find out what happened before they end up vanishing just like she did."--Back cover.… (más)

This book was so much more than I anticipated. I THOUGHT I was going to read a police procedural that just happened to take place on a Navajo Reservation. What I got was that but it wrapped around friends, family, and neighbors creating a loving strong bond and faith few people are ever able to grasp. The Navajo grasp it and are it. My heart feels steady because the people are steady but my mind is sad because of how much our current world is missing out on with such a strong bond. A wonderful read. ( )

Wonderful, in every sense

I’ve just read this for the second time. It is an enthralling story, told by three individuals - Navajo tribal policeman Ben, nurse Caroline, and doctor Owen - whose lives become inextricably linked. The background of life on “the rez” is beautifully drawn, helping the reader understand something of the culture and mindset of the Navajo.

The roots of the story go back years - to the loss of Ben’s younger sister and the betrayal of a close friend - and include a startling instance of tribal law. These events fractured Ben’s family and still cause him to be despised and distrusted by many on the rez and even by some of his colleagues. On this foundation is built a richly complex and moving novel combining Navajo mythology with modern supernatural fantasy.

Very highly recommended. ( )

Intriguing story about Navajo life on the reservation and medical personnel working there. It includes dealing with death and is clearly paranormal yet has solid roots in reality. The concise, clear writing pulled me in with the alternating persons looking me in the eye and telling me how it went down. Excellent book! It is currently free on Amazon. ( )

This is a mystical fantasy. You know there's something weird going on from the first page, but it takes a while to realize that you're not reading too much into it. The mythology of the Navajo forms the basis of this novel which takes us on an epic journey with battles that no one knew were being fought.

The crows are acting weird, but maybe that's okay. Ben Dejooli thinks. It's fall and crows flock in the fall. One dead gambler is a sad story, but too often on this part of the rez, people die for no reason. The problem is that the crows just keep acting weirder. They follow him around and seem to be keeping their eyes on him.

Carolyn knows there's something wrong with Ben. She can see the colors of sickness on patients, and Ben is in real trouble. When Owen agrees with her they set out to convince Ben to get tested. That's where everything goes sideways.

I recommend this to anyone who loves mystical stories that challenge the way you look at the world. ( )

If you drive due west from the city of Albuquerque, New Mexico, for two hours and then cut north before you hit the city of Gallup, you'll see a big stretch of glass-flat nothing dusted with sand, slightly lighter in color than the rest of the Red Rock Country to the north.

But if you have enough gas in the tank and want to see one of greatest feats of social engineering the United States ever attempted, head north through the flats and keep driving until you hit the Chaco Navajo Reservation.
