#77, Elliepotten: I have read your review and noted that you enjoyed the Sally Hawkins version of Persuasion (my favorite Austen on most days; P&P on others).

I finished Persuasion on Friday... oh, how I loved it. I started Narrow Dog to Carcassone but I had to ditch it about twenty pages in. I know it's supposed to be funny and brilliant, and I've been on two very lovely narrowboating holidays, but honestly, half of every page was just random ...
>100 Persuasion 's also my favourite Austen. I've only seen the Ciaran Hinds/Amanda Root adaptation that CatyM mentions in >117, but loved that too.
Finally found you and starred you!
Glad you enjoyed Persuasion so much. :)
I've just remembered that I DID watch Persuasion (the Amanda Root/Ciaran Hinds version) and loved it. hmm... I know there's one Austen book I haven't watched as a movie yet but I can't remember which one it is.
... was on display there! The closest I'm every likely to get to Mr Darcy... :-)
Fliss - hi, by the way! I enjoyed our Persuasion discussion so I thought I'd head over and check out your thread, so many great reads floating around this year already!
Persuasion is my favourite Austen, followed closely by Pride and Prejudice. I loved the Sally Hawkins/Rupert Penry-Jones adaptation, too, although the 1995 Amanda Root/Ciaran Hinds adaptation is my favourite version.
It's been a few years since I read any Austen, though - I might have to ...

... been here nearly two hours and haven't had one person through the door yet. *sigh* On the plus side, it meant I finished Persuasion yesterday and am well into The Snow Tourist now!
I love Austen and have not yet read Persuasion . Obviously I need to fix that!
I'm glad you finally got to read Persuasion , Ellie, and I love your review. Persuasion , Pride & Prejudice and Sense & Sensibility are my top 3 favorite Austen books. I don't think I've seen the movie on Persuasion .. must look for the DVD on Netflix.
While P&P is still my favorite, Persuasion is my next favorite Austen. I'm glad you found it finally!!

If you enjoyed Sense and Sensibility, I heartily recommend Persausion ! ;)
I really need to read Persuasion , it just hasn't come up on my list yet. In fact, the only Jane Austen I've read is Sense and Sensibility. I liked it, not sure why I haven't read more.

Yep, Persuasion in the snow. It's my fourth Austen and for some reason, one that I've kept consciously putting off. Heaven knows why - it may turn out to be my favourite! Who couldn't fail to feel for poor Anne and her silent love for the dashing Captain Wentworth? Wonderful.
#24 Ah elliepotten, Persausion is my favourite Jane Austen (and probably in my top 5 books) - I hope you enjoy it. I'll pre-warn you that the Sally Hawkins/Rupert Penry-Jones TV version doesn't bear a whole lot of relation to the book...

I really love Persuasion too. That letter, from Captain Wentworth, at the end *swoon*
There is a depth to Anne in this story, I think, that Austen's other female characters lack. She made a mistake, and deals with the consequences. And yay wins in the end.

How 'bout adjusting prediction to include people's ratings? If I rated Persuasion twice what I thought it would, it's gotta indicate that I'd probably like some other books more than it would think too, right?
I like it, even if it ended up with a few kinks in its accuracy. As in, it said I "will probably like" Persuasion with a "very high" certainty. Hi, all ~ Though I have not yet read the book, I watched Persuasion , the first of the adaptations, and did not enjoy it at all. I'm told that the book is really wonderful, but I'm afraid it may be a bit spoiled for me now.
Therefore, having read only Pride and Prejudice so far, and not ...

... from my January reading will be awarded by coin toss, to Alison Weir's Queen Isabella or Jane Austen's Persuasion .
Of three books and most of a fourth,
Persuasion , by Jane Austen, and
Queen Isabella , by Alison Weir, are more or less tied for top honors.
Good Wives , by Laurel Thatcher Ulrich comes in reasonably close.
Finished Persuasion and about to finish my re-read of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I think I'll read The Devil in the Junior League and re-read Sense and Sensibility next.
... huge difficulty in concentrating. I'm not sure I'll be able to read much, but I'll do my best!
So far I've read Persuasion , by Jane Austen, The Butterfly Tatoo, by Philip Pullman, Stoneheart, by Charlie Fletcher and I'm currently reading Kiss, Kiss, by Roald Dahl ...
... two in between). Also on the list for the year: Pride and Prejudice, Middlemarch, Brave New World, The Good Earth, Persuasion . All first time reads. And a couple of Shakespeare plays thrown into the mix.

... introduction and the first 3 chapters of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy for my book club.
I think I'll start Persuasion as well. I need something where good people end up happy and in love.
2. Cryptonomicon Wow, that's a long book! Totally worth it, though!
3. Persuasion Had to re-read it after watching the mangled adaptation on PBS the weekend before last.
So I'm off to a slow start, but making progress!
It's just, just over here (in California), and I agree that it's much more enjoyable than Persuasion . Nice casting--I really did like Catherine and Tilney, too.

I just finished Cryptonomicon. What a fun book!
I'm almost done re-reading Persuasion too, but I've read it several times before so it doesn't really count. With all the new Jane Austen adaptations being shown on PBS in the next couple of months, I'll probably be reading all of them for ...
... The Night Manager, The Arabian Nights- this one I'll probably be picking at all year.
On deck: The Discoveries, Persuasion
Other than that, I'm totally open to suggestions for a reading list that will expand far faster than I can actually read them all.
I know several people who list Persuasion as their favorite work by Austen, and I can understand why. It's probably third for me behind P&P and S&S.
All this talk of the Root/Hinds version is making me want to watch it again. Really I should just buy it; it's excellent. I totally agree about ...
... I used to record the new, inferior Persuasion. Maybe Northanger Abbey will be better.
Storeetllr - I think you'll enjoy Persuasion . Many people (me included for what it's worth), think it is better than P&P.
Oh compskibook I loved the 1990 adaptation of Persuasion . I too am excited to see Northanger Abbey which I think is very funny and Mansfield Park They are also doing a biopic on Jane Austen at the end I own the Ehle/Firth P&P but I'll happily watch it again. . .
Really, it's not that bad. I read Persuasion in about two days, without remembering that I had a "deadline".

Well, what I have to say about the recent production of Persuasion is really anticlimactic, and not nearly as interesting as what wisewoman wrote above, but...keeping in mind I have not seen any other film version and have not even read the book (I just read P&P for the first time last year, and I ...
Mmmm...I think I'm all about Persuasion , because I really like the melancholic, autumnal feel that slowly gives way to this almost girlish, breathless passion (well, passion for Austen anyway). There's far more palpitating and panting in Persuasion than the others. Obviously the others all ...
... Most people I've talked with hate her, but I recently met two Austen fans at work who listed Mansfield Park and Persuasion as their top two and both copped to loving Fanny Price!
For me it's a toss-up between Persuasion and Emma... although they're as different as two Austen novels (and two Austen heroines) can be.
I'll never forget Joanna Russ, in her book How to Suppress Women's Writing, describing Emma as something very close to a mystery novel. Each time I ...
Hi, April. I thought this version of Persuasion was pretty good, loved the casting of Capt. Wentworth, Yum! I think I actually liked it better than the Hinds/Root version because the actor playing Wentworth was more appealing.

The recent Masterpiece Theater adaptation of Jane Austen's Persuasion . Again, pretty good, but the book is better.
List, as of January 12, 2008:
1. Alison Weir's Queen Isabella
2. Jane Austen's Persuasion
I started reading Laurel Thatcher Ulrich's Good Wives on Thursday (after reading Jane Austen's Persuasion at speed -- despite the day job, I finished it in a day and a half).
I finished Jane Austen's Persuasion today (in an astonishingly short period of time). I'm working out the draft of a review, which I will post when my sinuses are behaving themselves -- though, come to think of it, they probably won't until the temperature does.
I did, however, ...

Persuasion is my favorite of Austen's novels, too! I didn't like Emma much, nor S&S, but P&P and Persuasion are both quite entertaining. I'm glad I'm not alone in listing this as my favorite of hers.

I started Paris 1919 about the end of WWI. I was in serious need of a non-fiction fix after reading Austen's Persuasion last week.
I am surprised Masterpiece Theatre (or the powers that be) would remake Persuasion when they have a perfectly wonderful adaptation already. They had the sense to keep the excellent Pride and Prejudice and the okay Emma, but the old Persuasion was much better than the old Emma.
