Fiction. Literature. HTML:??Enthralling . . . [an] exquisitely moral mystery of how we struggle to accept and love the people we call family.???The New York Times Book Review (Editor??s Choice)
NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY The New York Times Book Review ? Esquire ? BookPage
A gripping novel with the pace of a thriller but the nuanced characterization and deep empathy of some of the literary canon??s most beloved novels, Remember Me Like This introduces Bret Anthony Johnston as one of the most gifted storytellers writing today. With his sophisticated and emotionally taut plot and his shimmering prose, Johnston reveals that only in caring for one another can we save ourselves.
Four years have passed since Justin Campbell??s disappearance, a tragedy that rocked the small town of Southport, Texas. Did he run away? Was he kidnapped? Did he drown in the bay? As the Campbells search for answers, they struggle to hold what??s left of their family together.
Then, one afternoon, the impossible happens. The police call to report that Justin has been found only miles away, in the neighboring town, and, most important, he appears to be fine. Though the reunion is a miracle, Justin??s homecoming exposes the deep rifts that have diminished his family, the wounds they all carry that may never fully heal. Trying to return to normal, his parents do their best to ease Justin back into his old life. But as thick summer heat takes hold, violent storms churn in the Gulf and in the Campbells?? hearts. When a reversal of fortune lays bare the family??s greatest fears??and offers perhaps the only hope for recovery??each of them must fight to keep the ties that bind them from permanently tearing apart.

Whew! Gripping story! I am gasping as I finish it - racing for the end to see what happens!
This story of a family torn apart as their son is kidnapped holds interest throughout - not because there is a lot of action, but more because the inner life of the characters is so well explored. The family falls apart, delicately and dramatically, they find places of contact that then seem to sever, they hide from each other and reveal only little bits at a time.
In other books, this can be annoying. You want to sit them all in a room and demand they talk to each other and stop being ridiculously secretive. But,given the setup in this story, the experience they all endure, the guilt they all feel, the secrecy seems real, and necessary for each character.
Fantastically well done and a great read. Unsettling, but there is hope at the end. ( )

Great story. Not really sure what happened in the end (don't want to spoil anything for anybody), so I won't say more. Great writing. A story of redemption I think, and that love can save us. ( )

Remember Me Like This. Bret Anthony Johnston. 2015. Wow! Can this guy write! The plot and the characters are carefully and completely developed. We are able to really feel what the characters feel and understand them. We see the inner workings of each family member, Justin Campbell disappeared 4 years ago. His parents and brother have gone through agony trying to find him and wondering if he dead or alive. Suddenly his father gets a call from the police. Justin has been found. He returns home and he and the family struggle to adjust, to come to terms with what has happened. This is a beautifully written novel of family life. ( )

Rating a little high because of the uniqueness. Story dragged after halfway but kept hoping for more excitement. Boy missing for four years. Good explanation of how members of the family and the community lose hope and interest in finding him. Felt like father who actually started looking for him at the dump. The family mentally and in case of mother especially loses their compass. Mom so down that husband finds comfort elsewhere. Bugged me first that Justin never fully explains how he was treated but it truly gave an impression of what happens when experts say 'wait for victim to talk'. I don't think I could have avoided questioning, don't think Justin will be able to live totally normal. Brother was most realistic with finding comfort in girlfriend, trouble doing skateboarding anymore. Ending surprised me since beginning made you wonder. ( )

There is one word that sums up this book for me; overwrought. The author knows his craft and can turn out good prose. The problem is that he does so about the same thing over and over again. Every emotion, every thought is described at length. It got to the point where I read the dialogue and about the first two sentences of each paragraph and skipped the rest because that was the only way I could get through this.

I am familiar with this kind of writing because I attended the U of Iowa and I took classes with a lot of the Workshop writers. I read a story that got a writer into the Workshop (no easy feat). It was a 23-page story about two minutes in someone's life. Reading it was like watching a soap opera. Or watching paint dry. This book reminded me of that. For me, it's about the suspension of disbelief. I live in a book while I am reading it and I can't do that when I am annoyed and distracted by a writer's attempt to make every sentence a present wrapped up in a pretty bow at the expense of the story.

As I said, the author knows how to turn out a nice phrase. I even like his characters and the story is good. But he beats the reader into submission with the sheer volume of expostulation. I really wanted to like this book, but I absolutely did not.
