"Ten years ago he was a boy, given the name Thomas Paxton and sent by Revolutionary France to infiltrate the British Intelligence Service. Now his sense of honor brings him back to London, alone and unarmed, to confess. But instead of facing the gallows, he's given one last impossible assignment to prove his loyalty. Lovely, lying, former French spy Camille Leyland is dragged from her safe rural obscurity by threats and blackmail. Dusting off her spy skills, she sets out to track down a ruthless French fanatic and rescue the innocent victim he's holding--only to find an old colleague already on the case. Pax. Old friendship turns to new love, and as Pax and Camille's dark secrets loom up from the past, Pax is left with a choice--go rogue from the Service or lose Camille forever..."-- From back cover.… (más)

Author suggested reading order puts this book at number three because it takes place in 1802 London. It does make for a more accurate timeline when reading. ( )

I liked these two lead characters. They had an interesting history between them, and were both highly skilled. I liked the little ways they looked after one another, and the sacrifices they were willing to make as well. Family was a major theme, big ones, bad ones, those we choose, all kinds. It was a nice influence for two people who grew up as they did. I felt happy for them. ( )

I adore this series on audio. Kirsten Potter takes Joanna Bourne's lyrical writing and elevates it further. The accents and personalities the spies take on during their work, the scenery, the little pieces of mystery and yearning throughout... It's magic.

The books are not written in chronological order, so this is #5, but the events are taking place before much of THE BLACK HAWK. (Bourne has a helpful guide on her website.) The romance in this didn't work for me as well as a couple of the others, but I loved the friendship the two protagonists had built as children, and the ways that decades-old bond informed their adult interactions. Even though they're spies, both working for two sides, their relationship reads as friends-to-lovers, which is some sort of storytelling magic. ( )

Really, look no further if regency spy romance is your thing (and even if it's not), this series might just be the best at doing it. Would have liked a few more romantic scenes between Pax and Cami but the story and interweaving of story arcs and characters from previous books in the series was amazing. I also find myself needing to go re-read The Black Hawk to spend more time with Hawker :) ( )

3 stars... the first book in the series that I read instead of listening to the audiobook version. Most of this book happens during book 4 as well.... Right after Hawker gets shot so that was a bit bizarre. Interesting though and I enjoyed reading. I give it 3 stars. ( )
