She has room in her truck for Amber and a temporary job caring for her wheelchair-bound father once they reach Oakland. In a moment of weakness, she offers both. Though grateful for the opportunity, Amber finds herself on pins and needles over Joy's obsessive tidiness and stringent rules. Little wonder, since Joy finds her slovenly and undisciplined. No way will these two opposites attract--a romance this thorny can only be headed right back where it started: nowhere. I really enjoy romances where the leading ladies are on opposite ends of the personality spectrum / social status / work standing and then get to work their way towards each other. So I started this book with high expectations. It's probably just me, but I find the lead characters not very sympathetic or even likable, despite the fact that they remind me of the polar-opposite leading ladies in [b:Crystal's Heart|4460808|Crystal's Heart|B.L. Miller|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1356189194s/4460808.jpg|4509058] by [a:B.L. Miller|1862592|B.L. Miller|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/authors/1371940420p2/1862592.jpg] and [a:Verda Foster|1962136|Verda Foster|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/authors/1361302780p2/1962136.jpg], one of my all-time favorite reads.
Its been a few months since I last read West of Nowhere, but I remembered feeling that, from their actions, the two ladies don't love each other as much as they love themselves. I realize the author was probably trying for realism, but I am a hopeless romantic. 8-)
