Cassie Parker has grown used to denying her sexuality. Her father, the Reverend Parker, has made that a necessity. When Cassie meets Luke Winston, she can no longer deny her attraction to women, or more accurately--to Luke. Cassie's struggle with the feelings Luke has brought out in her is overshadowed by the unexpected visit from the Reverend Parker. Will Cassie choose life without family or life without love? Then, Cassie's father (a very homophobic Reverend) appears and much angst gets introduced into the story. It's the classic Blood family vs. Found/Made family.
And, even before the Reverend comes onto the scene there's lots of back and forth and slight uncomfortable-ness between Luke and Cassie. Cassie is an interesting character in and unto herself, sort of deep in the closet, but if you read closely not totally in the closet too. I'm not sure I've read a character quite like Cassie, well, ever.
I do wish that there was more about Cassie's mother and Luke's former girlfriend. We got glimpses into those worlds, but I thought it would have been great if we had seen more (sequel? Just kidding.)
Honestly I liked this novel as much as I've ever liked a piece of lesbian fiction. It wasn't my favorite one ever, but Gerri Hill always seems to have slightly better than average lesbian fiction romances. ( )
