A young warrior-in-training faces high school, romance, and a host of magical foes in the New York Times bestselling author's YA urban fantasy novel.
I've seen so many freaky things since I started attending Mythos Academy last fall. I know I'm supposed to be a fearless warrior, but most of the time, I feel like I'm just waiting for the next Bad, Bad Thing to happen. Like someone trying to kill meâ??again.
Everyone at Mythos Academy knows me as Gwen Frost, the Gypsy girl who uses her psychometry magic to find lost objectsâ??and who just may be dating Logan Quinn, the hottest guy in school. But I'm also the girl the Reapers of Chaos want dead. The Reapers are the same bad guys who murdered my mom. It turns out she hid a powerful artifact from them before she died. They think I know where it is, but this is one thing I can't use my magic to find. All I do know is that the Reapers are coming for meâ??and I'm in for the fight of my l

Oh Gwen. Oh dear sweet poor angst-filled Gwen. Estep puts Gwen through the ringer this book--which is saying something considering she was almost sacrificed in the first book and then had her almost boyfriend Preston try to murder her multiple times in between making out with her. The book starts easily enough--everyone has to go to the museum for a history project! Just what all high school kids, warrior or otherwise, want to do on the last day of winter break.

Oh and then Reapers attack and all hell breaks loose. Guess the project is scraped huh?

The one thing I've gotta say about this Mythos Academy--they really need a better vetting system for their students and staff. I mean, how exactly no one noticed this Reaper's movements, shenanigan's and crazy insane plots makes me wonder if there aren't way more agents of Chaos running around then folk want to admit to.

Over the course of the Mythos Academy books Gwen's had a pretty rough ride--in the first book she finds out about her secret heritage and that she's Nike's Champion (oh and by the way the world is on the brink of chaos), the second book she's emotionally manipulated and nearly killed a half dozen times plus finds out the truth about her mother's death and now in DARK FROST she's facing the consequences of not being fully prepared to handle her destiny or her powers. Even though Estep ups the anty each book for Gwen to deal with I never felt there's a sense of contrivance.

Each new hurdle Gwen has to overcome feels organic to her story. She's slowly learning how to harness her powers and thus taps into something dangerous in a moment of desperation. Her fighting abilities are continuing to show progress because she's been training really hard every day. The relationship problems she's having with Logan are a direct consequence of her inability to harness her powers and their shared inability to understand the other's pasts and how it affects them now.

Gwen doesn't dwell, which I appreciate. As much as she is overly nosy and does seem to walk herself into danger because of it, I'd far rather see her suddenly in danger then moping over Logan not talking to her.

I did want to cry foul about what happens in the beginning with Daphne and Carson. While its a great way to introduce a new level to Daphne's character, as well as give us a piece of the larger picture (without making a big deal of it) it felt rushed. I'm not sure if that's because it came after a very intense few scenes and was one emotional anxiety too many or if it could have been presented later in the book, but the timing bothered me.

Book 4 CRIMSON FROST (that's not ominous or anything), doesn't come out until...oh lovely 2013. Wonderful. Rest assured I am eagerly awaiting this next book!

And remember kids, pink saves lives.

All the self loathing was a bit much for my tastes but I still enjoyed this installment. ( )

I thought that this book was very well done! The action starts quickly in this installment and I was eager to see how everything would work out in the end. This is the third book in the Mythos Academy series which I would recommend in order since the story builds on the events in previous installments of the series. I found this to be an incredibly entertaining and exciting addition to the series.

Gwen and her friends prove how fierce they can be when they are present during a Reaper attack at a local museum. On top of everything else, Gwen needs to find the Helheim Dagger that her mother hid and locate a lost item for a girl at school. She is having some trouble with her friend, Daphne, who is going through a few things of her own. The mystery kept me guessing until the end and I loved that they were a few surprises along the way.

Tara Sands has done a remarkable job with this series. She has expertly brought Gwen and the rest of the characters to life. I love the various character voices that she uses in her reading. I thought that she added just the right amount of emotion and excitement to her reading. I think that she really elevates the story to the next level and I am certain that her narration added to my enjoyment of this story.

I would recommend this series to others. I thought that this book did a fantastic job of blending action, excitement, mythology, and character relationships. I can’t wait to read more of Gwen’s adventures very soon. ( )

I love Mythology books and these are a great series of books. I love seeing how these books progress and how Gwen deals with the things that are thrown her way. I love all the characters especially Gwen and Logan.

I would recommend these books for anybody who loves Mythology genre. ( )

The end of this book marks the middle of the six book series, and it has appropriately dark parts to show for it. It is, however, still a YA, and still has plenty of hope and humor in the book as well. It's nice to see Gwen developing more friends, and seeing how the friendships develop. It's also great to see her enemies shaping up and becoming less nebulous. I look forward to seeing how this series continues. ( )
