The species of Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.) are known popularly by a number of names. The species most propagated in Alaska was O. nerka, the sockeye salmon, known as the red salmon in Alaska and blueback on the Columbia River. Other species were O. tshawytscha, the chinook salmon, known as the king, spring, tyee or blackmouth; O. gorbuscha, the pink, humback or humpie salmon; O. kisutch, the coho or silver salmon; O. keta, the chum salmon, also known as the dog or fall salmon.
