17-year-old Lila has two secrets she's prepared to take to the grave. The first is that she can move things just by looking at them. The second is that she's been in love with her brother's best friend, Alex, since forever. After a mugging exposes her unique ability, Lila decides to run to the only people she can trust - her brother and Alex. They live in Southern California where they work for a secret organisation called The Unit, and Lila discovers that the two of them are hunting down the men who murdered her mother five years before. So, what's to like about [b:Hunting Lila|10188580|Hunting Lila (Lila, #1)|Sarah Alderson|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1327127900s/10188580.jpg|15087473]? Every. Single. Thing. Or at least, that's how I feel.

I've read this twice now, and my opinion hasn't changed. Only thing that's changed is the fact that the first time I read it? I didn't think there was going to be a second Lila book. All I can say? Thank God for Goodreads Now? I. Just. Can't. Wait!

And although I'll admit that, yes the main character, Lila, was annoying; I didn't care! Because I loved the story. The story was great. So the people out there who disagree with me? Deal. Because I'm not changing my mind any time soon!

I heard Sarah Alderson has released a short prequel to [b:Hunting Lila|10188580|Hunting Lila (Lila, #1)|Sarah Alderson|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1327127900s/10188580.jpg|15087473] : [b:Catching Suki|13446529|Catching Suki (Lila, #0.5)|Sarah Alderson|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1327975392s/13446529.jpg|18959276]! I wanted to like this book. The writing is strong, the pacing is fantastic, the premise is good, the plot slots together nicely.

I want to say that it is a good book. This is probably true. I want to say it is a great read. I can't.

Why? Because I ground my teeth all the way through. I read it to get it over with, because it was good enough that I didn't want to put it down, but damn it, would it just end already. And then the ending - feels like there is a sequel over the horizon. Which - good, because there were a lot of interesting avenues that could be explored - and - bad, because I might be tempted to read it. And then I'll get cranky at them all again.

I get that the point of view character is 17, and stressed, and obsessed with one particular young man who spends a lot of the novel in the same room with her. But the constant references to the buff nature of different parts of his body - bored silly.

Lila, the hero of the title, has a bad experience near her home in London, and deals with it by running off to the US to her brother Jack. Who is really unimpressed with having her lob in on him, not because he doesn't want to see her, but because he thinks that it is dangerous for her to be there. Which he won't actually come out and say, so she spends quite a while being quite believably teen-angsty about the whole situation. And then the truth comes out. Which is the pattern of the novel -- Lila misunderstands something, angsts (or obsesses over her brother's best friend Alex), some truth comes out. Over, and over again. Layers of an onion, things like that.

This constant rearranging the point of view, changing the perspective on the information already available, is one of the strengths of the story. Lila is busy trying to make her world view settle down into something she can cope with, and the reader is dragged along for the ride.

This is either a romance with very heavy suspense/action on the side, or an action/suspense/adventure story with very heavy romance on the side. Either way, to really enjoy this book, I think that both of these will need to appeal to the reader. Rating: story quality 7/10, enjoyment 3/10. Given that this is a first book there is potential for great things, although from the teaser for the second book, I'm not going to like it either. ( )

Loved this, a refreshingly good read and a great twist that I only saw coming right at the last moment. Very impressed with the first novel by Sarah Alderson and will be waiting impatiently for more. ( )
