To support her small daughter, April Ortiz does what she has to do--which means waiting tables in a skimpy outfit at a popular nightclub in Chula Vista. When one of her co-workers is murdered, April does what she knows she shouldn't--she defies the neighborhood code by talking to the police about a dangerous suspect.   Clean-cut cop Noah Young wants a shot at breaking this case more than anything in the world--that is, until he meets April. A spark ignites between them, threatening his job and her peace of mind. As the heat intensifies, the two are dragged down further into the dark mysteries of the graffiti-lined streets, taunted by a crazed killer who could strike again at any time.… (más)

I really enjoyed this book. The biggest plus is that the characters were very different. The hero, Noah, was a beat cop who hoped to eventually make homicide detective. The heroine, April, was latina and an unwed mother who had lived wild as a teenager but who had straightened her life out. She is going to college and working as a cocktail waitress and raising her daughter. She had ties to the local latino gang. One of the gang members, her daughter's uncle Eric, was also a main character. He was a very sympathetic character even though he was in a gang and you really rooted for him. Noah's sister Meghan was also a major character. There was a lot of very well researched info on gangs. It was all pertinent to the story and there wasn't just an info dump. I really liked the way that this was written. It was fast paced and kept my interest. The plot made sense and moved right along. The ending while not unexpected had a little bit of a surprise.

The relationship between Noah and April could have been better developed. They didn't actually spend much time together. It wasn't that the relationship wasn't believable but I felt it was short changed a bit. The love scenes were smoking hot though. I really liked the relationship between Eric and Meghan and hope that maybe they will eventually have their own book. So far this author hasn't written her books in a series though but I'm keeping my fingers crossed. ( )

If I keep reading these types of books, I think I'm going to have to add a "thriller" shelf to Goodreads. I wouldn't classify THE EDGE OF NIGHT as a mystery, as the murders seem more like a tension generating backdrop rather than the focus of the story. I enjoyed this particular story, though I'm beginning to find Sorensen's pattern of including one adult couple and one teenage couple in each of her books a little distracting. ( )
