More than later writers, they understood and tolerated Machiavelli's weaknesses and flaws, sometimes being shocked or miffed, other times laughing at his escapades, and considering him first and foremost not a political or literary genius, but, more simply, and intelligent, cultivated, hilariously amusing person, and a Florentine to the core.
