Oggi ha inizio la Transgender Awareness Week, che mira a dare visibilità alle persone transgender e di genere non conforme e che si chiuderà lunedì 20 novembre con il Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR), una giornata per ricordare le vittime della transfobia.
Per l’occasione volevo quindi parlarvi di questo libro che ho letto qualche anno fa e che sul momento ho quasi odiato tanto è grande la sua capacità di togliere la terra di sotto i piedi e destabilizzare chi legge. Per questo, non finirò mai di ringraziarlo.
Di cosa parla Gender Outlaws: The Next Generation di così spaventevole? È una raccolta di testimonianze di persone transgender, non binarie, travestite, transessuali e via dicendo che sfidano quello che ci hanno insegnato e credevamo di sapere sui generi. Le esperienze riportate sono così varie che è altamente probabile trovarne almeno una in grado di scuotere le nostre convinzioni.
Purtroppo il libro è disponibile solo in inglese (ma dai?), ma provate a dargli una chance, prendendolo in prestito su Internet Archive: c’è sia questa versione del 2010, sia quella precedente del 1994 e intitolata Gender Outlaw: On Men, Women, and the Rest of Us. Se siete avvezz* a leggere in inglese non dovreste avere problemi, ma prendendolo in prestito, male che vada, non avrete buttato soldi! ( )
This anthology of stories, poems, history, and opinions from queer people just goes to show how diverse the queer community is. Given that each of the contributions is by a different person, they all hit a little bit differently. Some of them I connected to rather well, but others I was underwhelmed by. There were some good points made throughout, but it did not feel as if it had a sense of direction or purpose behind placing the contributions where they were. ( )
This book shares the perspectives of various "gender outlaws" who defy cultural or countercultural norms surrounding gender in the societies in which they live. It does a great job of portraying the diversity of the trans and genderqueer community and giving insight into different ways people can understand gender. The book remains topical, touching on a lot of issues that I still see discussed surrounding trans people now, online and in real life. Readers will benefit from a basic knowledge of the current American transgender rights landscape, including subjects like bathroom bills, trans-exclusionary radical feminism, and transgender fetishism. As a trans person, I believe there's a lot of insight here for trans and queer people as well as cis ones, particularly in the various essays disussing queer community norms and feminist approaches to queerness. I wanted a book to better orient me around trans issues . . . and wow. This is it! Definitely a case of giving me just enough information to know that you can't wrap all gender issues up in one book ... a must-read for anyone wanting to check their own cis privilege. ( )
