I have just seen that you are the only other member who has listed Hugh McCord's "Personal Reflections of Ottawa Past. I'm not quite as old as Mr. McCord, but I certainly remember much of what he wrote about so it was a pleasant little book to read that reminded me of many things I'd forgottern. Did you grow up in Ottawa at the same time? Regards, Michael Chandler

I seem to have commented on this some time ago, but I still think "cheesy" is the wrong word. They're just rather shallow, but actually good for the audience they're aimed at.

You commented on the Time-Life Cradle of Civilization that these series tend to be "cheesy", but I have 3 series I inherited from my brother when he no longer had room for them, and I've found them useful entry-level or quick review sources. What they really are is superficial, but the pictures are always nice to look at, and, as I said, good for beginners. Some people get hooked and start digging deeper 8-) I like the Emergence of Man and Great Ages of Man series. I've bought parts of some of their series myself, particularly the Seafarers(sailing ships only).
If you want to look at my catalog, you'll notice I get pretty deeply into subjects that really interest me.

I don't have the patience to add as many books as you have; I've declared all except medieval fiction off limits and I still keep finding non-fiction to add.
