Hi! I see we share A Fool's Errand: A Novel of the South During Reconstruction (along with 141 other books). Have you read A Fool's Errand yet? I just stumbled upon it in an antique store in a tiny Northern California town. It looks fascinating but I was wondering whether it was readable. All the best from California! Jerry
tentative rating system:

1/2 star = the worst book/writing out there, completely unreadable, walk away, utter crap, nothing interesting at all here, a bad writer at his or her worst

* star = one of the worst books out there but not the worst, unreadable but with some smidge of hope, a really bad book with maybe one interesting thing

* 1/2 stars = the awful pain of bad writing slowly kicks, barely made it, almost not unreadable, a bad book with a few intersting points

** stars = a very mediocre book that reads well enough to avoid pain, readable but with no humph, interesting but really not interesting, a bad writer at his or her best

** 1/2 = a mediocre book that has potential, can't decide if bad or good, perhaps a mediocre book by a major writer, uncertainly interesting on a wobble

*** stars = a solid interesting book, but probably will not reread it again, perhaps a good book but not my fave

*** 1/2 stars = a strong book, will reread maybe once again, something is there but it's not that important

**** stars = a very strong book, will reread it a few more times, entering favorite book/author territory, stop to ponder if this is now my fave

**** 1/2 stars = one of the best out there, will return to this many times, you are now my favorite book/author territory, perhaps a major work by a minor writer

***** stars = a true classic, will be returing to this years in the future, a life-changing moment, a major work by a major writer
